2018 Range Rover in Fuji White

If your sense of wanderlust leaves you eager to venture off the beaten path, you need an SUV that can match your spirit of adventure. When considering options, the Range Rover and Mercedes G550 come to mind as formidable options, but which one is going to take you further around Ventura, Camarillo, and Oxnard?

To find out, the team at Land Rover Ventura compared the 2018 Range Rover vs. Mercedes G550 on the points of powertrain, off-road readiness, and safety technology.

Range Rover vs Mercedes G550: Engine Specs

2018 Range Rover PerformanceThere’s no doubting that both SUVs are hard working. In fact, the Range Rover and Mercedes G550 both come with V8 engines that allow them to achieve impressive power and torque outputs and accelerate from 0-60 MPH in less than six seconds.

The 4.0L V8 biturbo engine in the G550 delivers 416 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque, while propelling you to 60 MPH in just 5.8 seconds. The Range Rover, however, gets you there a bit faster—in 5.1 seconds—with its 5.0L V8 supercharged engine that puts out 518-557 horsepower and 461-516 lb-ft of torque.

Without this added kick of power, drivers in the Mercedes G550 may find their experience lacking.

Off-Road Capabilities

Both the Range Rover and Mercedes G550 are built with a no-strings-attached mentality, outfitted with features and design elements that can help you go anywhere you please. For example, they’re both equipped with a permanent all-wheel drive (AWD) system with a 2-speed transfer case.

This transfer box, standard with both luxury SUVs, adds an extra lower gear for even more might when tackling tough obstacles. They also both offer a ground clearance of over eight inches for more rugged terrain.

The G550 stands 8.07 inches from the ground, while the Range Rover clears 8.7 inches at standard driving height; However, when you head off-road, the Electronic Air Suspension lets you adjust your ride height to 11.6 inches when you need help clearing bigger obstacles.

This also allows it to ford through up to 35.4 inches of water when necessary, compared to just 23.6 inches in the Mercedes G550.

Range Rover vs Mercedes G550 Safety Technology

2018 Range Rover Safety TechnologyOf course, you can’t be exploring the great wild yonder at all hours of the day, eventually you’ll have to rejoin the flow of traffic. When you do, both the Range Rover and Mercedes G550 come with several smart safety features that can make your drives around town safer and more convenient.

When changing lanes on a crowded highway, for example, both SUVs make a Blind Spot Monitor available to alert you to drivers in your side blind spots. They both have an available Smart Cruise Control feature, as well, that can automatically slow your cruising speed to a safe following distance when approaching slower-moving traffic.

The Range Rover also makes a Lane Departure Warning system standard, which issues an alert if you’re drifting from your intended lane of travel, and gently guides you back between the lines. With this feature in-tow, drivers may feel slightly more in control on the highway than those in the G550.
